Cabinet:
Slik Stik (now defunct?) cabinet with four 8-way joysticks and 7 buttons each. The trackball and spinner are recognized by the OS as additional mice/mouses. The black joystick is a dedicated 4-way to play early 80’s games the way they were meant to… although it’s a little out of the way.
Audio/Visual:
The display is a real arcade 27″ multi-sync by Wells Gardner (D9400). Audio is piped through a bass unit inside the cab and two cheap but great Sony Xplod SX-R1311 5 1/4″ 160 watt speakers just underneath the marquee.
Computer:
Everything’s driven by an Intel Core2Duo E6300 overclocked to 2.45ghz paired with an ATI x700. By late 2008, you can get this combo with mobo and accessories for $250 or less. If you only want to run MAME, you can get by with just a little more than enough RAM to boot your OS. It doesn’t need much. This one has just a couple of gb so some of the other emulators and media apps can run a little better.
OS / Software:
MAME v0.127 with some of the popular patches like high score, and no nag startups, were compiled 64-bit and ran on Windows XP x64. This gives a pretty consistent boost in performance in MAME. I originally tried to run Vista x64 instead but I’m running Soft15Khz (please donate to sailorsat!) to drive the monitor at old arcade resolutions and 15khz refresh. It replaces the need to have a vga to jamma video or arcadevga video card. Unfortunately as of this writing, soft15khz does not work in 64-bit vista.
The front end is MALA with MAME, Atari 2600, Nintendo NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Master System, Genesis, and Sega 32X for emulators. I won’t go into each of the emulators but they’re essentially the popular ones ppl are running. Stella for 2600, Nulldc for dreamcast, etc. Just google for them…

How much to get that delivered to my door? How much!!
AWESOME!!
lol. The delivery fee will probably be more than most of the components. Seriously, if you don’t want to build or convert your own cab, you can find ppl on craigslist that sell them from US$600 and up. If you build / convert your own, you probably only need to spend half that after you throw in an old pc.
man you weren’t kidding about a performance boost, those videos show up instantly with no slowdown.
The preview videos probably had more to do with the hardware upgrade than 32bit vs 64bit. The previous version of this video was on a Pentium 4 2.4ghz with mediocre gfx. This one’s a overcloced core2duo with an X700.
For performance tests, I had about 20 slow games like Carnival, Star Blade, etc and then compared FPS using 32bit, 64bit, win 2k, xp, vista, overclocked, on both systems. 64bit averaged about 5-10% on most games. Some had no effect and some jumped 50% or higher.

……This is the most amazing machine I’ve ever seen. Holy. Crap. Love your vids Amiga.
dude wheres the dungeons and dragons games on there?
Ok you’ve forced me to sign in !I’ve been scowering Youtube for the best frontend to choose and this one tops it !I was going to go with GameEx frontend, but this has persuaded me. Im completely new to Mala, but your layout is exactly how i want it !I read your comment on your other vid how you arranged the layout, but would you be so kind as to just point a newb in the right direction of where to look in Mala to begin to reconfigure the design, or is it all there for me ?Many thanks !
if you PM me with a place to upload it, i’d be more than happy to. but the layout requires paths to be defined within mala as well. for other readers, i literally took the default layout, removed the space invaders background and just drew boxes for where the game list, control panel, and other stuff. this is for an 800×600 resolution btw.
Aha thank you.Now i’ve downloaded Mala, i’ve noticed there is a design editor to download with it.I think i’ll be able to go from there. Thanks for your time and assistance :)Long live the arcades ! haha.
I can’t get enough of this… How did you get that cool selection screen with previews, cabinet shots and all sorts of delicious details? I use MAME on my laptop but that has no menu to speak of. How did you pull this together? This is what I want for christmas.
You need to use a front end like MALA, AtomicFE, MameWah, Hyperspin, or any other ones.
so is that MALA running then? Looks fantastic.. Also do you run dreamcast games full speed? What are your pc specs?
specs in the video descriptiondreamcast on this is full speed. not so much previously on my p4
Well, I feel outdone. I have been doing my own (Linux based) Arcade Project since last August. Only I did a Console method, adapting Sega Genesis and Playstation controllers to USB, adding Flight sticks and even a WiiMote. My hat goes off to you, I don’t think I can surpass what you have done.
All I’ve done is collect media and used a front end i downloaded. I bought the cabinet. Besides, the cabs you and I play with are never finished!
Thats true, I’m constantly making changing and reconfiguring things. I want to make a video of it, but I’m afraid of DMCA claims if I do.On the Hardware end, I used a regular 27 inch TV with an RF Modulator for my display, My controllers consist of Two PSX Controllers, Four Sega Genesis Controllers, a Logitech Extreme Flight Stick, and a WiiMote with Clam shell.I run Linux and have had direct input on the development of WahCade and several emulators to get more systems running.
That is a tight system dude ! Wish I had room for one
I am however working on a plan for one. SO hopefully ( Cross My fingers ) I’ll get some cash back on My taxes & be able to build one.
Thanks man. Although recently, rather than playing arcade classics, we’ve been playing M.U.L.E. on the C64 emulator just about everyday. What type of rig are you planning on buying/building?
I’m still trying to compile a 64-bit mame for amd64 x2 with hiscore and no nag screens but i cant seem to get it to work
Is it possible to include PS1 and PS2 emulators in this interface?
Yes as long as the emulator accepts command line switches.
whats the process of intergrating your front end to my hard drive that i have thanks tim
do you have your drive hooked up to a computer?
No i have an external HD
So if you just have a hard drive, what would pick up the files / games from your hard drive? e.g. what would run the front end?
cool now you can play turtles or captain commando with 3 friends, lots of fun hehe
Yeah. BTW, you’ve got a very nice looking candy cab. How did you score that?
hehe here in Japan is not so hard to get one used cab for low price,i told you long ago i think btw lolhail to the retro gaming bro
Very nice.what frontend are you using?Did you build your own skin? How do you switch between screen information (At 1:00min)thanks
Using MALA for the front end. MALA has an option for the info screen. That can be used to read history.dat info and pull up graphics like the PCB board, title screenshot, etc.
I’m amazed by the genius and creativity of some people. That’s really awesome! I don’t know what it was like in arcades during the early 80’s because the game Rampage was what got be addicted to the arcade when I was in 5th grade, 1987. And I went ever since, through the peak of Street Fighter II.It’s a shame the arcades have died out, guess it was bound to happen once the consoles caught up.But it’s nice to see people still keeping that part of our youths alive and well!
Nice cabinet. MALA always looks awesome and you did a fine job with it. I made a MAME cabinet out of a Neo Geo MVS cabinet and it works well but its not as nice as yours. Great job!
that is so cool, if i had a lot of money that would be the first thing id buy
It’s not that much at once if you build it yourself. I’m almost done with mine and I started about this time last year. At first, I was intimidated because I don’t have much technical skills (wiring, building things, carpentry) but it wasn’t that hard with a little help, research, and dedication. Everything in my cabinet can be hooked up with usb to a computer. First thing I did was get an empty JAMMA cabinet. Look on ebay. Can get a used one for like $40-80 plus local pickup.
Thanks for the compliment but there was no genius nor creativity going on here. All the tools are free and help was provided from others who love retro games! MALA (the frontend) is only a tad more technical than making a powerpoint presentation or a facebook/myspace page.
You don’t need a lot of money if you’re willing to put in the time. For me, it was both but you certainly don’t have to go that route. fiveoheye is right about it.
awesome =)
Oh man… I’ve been obsessing over the idea of building my own 4-player cabinet. I want to rock the old x-men game with my brothers! Please tell me it keeps track of high scores.
yes it keeps high scores. that’s one of the best parts of mame. now, later versions of mame doesn’t keep score but there are hacks you can insert into the source and recompile to add it there. that’s why when you see my screen I wrote “Hi” in the title to remind the player this supports high scores
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is so cool man … would you ever consider selling it? If so, how much would you ask?
you fucker! sweet machine.
seriously, you fucker, sweet!
Arcade history in a box! awsome cab!
excuse me but what front end did you use?
check out the video description for a good summary.
Would you consider building one and selling it?
Also i was wondering… do you have the arcade version of Killer Instinct? you kinda blasted through the K’s and i didn’t see it.
Wow, can you upload? (emu-root files, fonts, etc.)How do you play N64 games, control?
how much space did all these emulators with all the games took? and how old can a PC be (the most) to run everything you have there?
The PC specs are in the video description.
well…nothing in your description answers to my questions. all I asked is how much space did all those emulators and roms take and what are the minimum requirements for the PC so they can all work.
Oh wow this is exactly what I was looking to do!
anything pc with A
Do you need to download a certain version of a game in order for the 4 player to work? I am building one and need help deciding on 2 or 4 player controls. Any disadvantage of a 4 or any extra steps you need to take when installing software? Any input would be apreciated
4 players doesn’t really require more effort software wise. Since all the buttons and controls are mapped to keyboard keys or mouse controls. The only thing you have to consider really is the keyboard interface you’re going to use has enough inputs for the joysticks and buttons. Which controller are you going to use? IPAC?
“I won’t go into each of the emulators but they’re essentially the popular ones ppl are running. Stella for 2600, Nulldc for dreamcast, etc. Just google for them… “Seriously, 5 minutes in Google will tell you this. But if you want an explanation: the more computer you can push into a MAME/MALA box, the better. If you’re truly concerned, multi terabyte drives are pretty cheap (even externally).
I wouldn’t see why he would. The amount of work it takes to make a cabinet, putting the components inside, then shipping it to your lazy self would cost you more than you would be willing to payWe’re talking several thousand dollars and (at least) a week of work for something you could do in your own time for less than $1000 (if you don’t want all the bells and whistles)
How do the videos play? Are they grabbed from the game itself or are they pre-loaded as .avi or .mpg files?
The videos are pre-recorded. they are from emumovies
I love your videos you’re a genius,my question isHow do you get when you move the control stick right or left to change the list of games?
It’s a built in function to the program MALA.
hey mate great cabinet. i have one question that i cant work out. on my cabinet i have all the nes roms and i have the snaps for them as well but how do i make it so mala displays the snaps for nes games. i know how to do it for mame. cheers. 5 stars
Same as all the other emulators. Make sure your roms are named EXACTLY the same as the snaps, movies, etc. good luck!
is the controller sold separately and where can you get one ?
everything is included
damn and what about the second part of that question
I bought mine used from this guy that originally bought it directly from slikstik.
Dude this is f***ed up! You have pretty much every single “old” game on here? How much Hard Drive space do you have on your computer?
best arcade machine Ive ever seen,,, WOW
eh big peace of poo caa caa
Yeah, it’s pretty sweet. The videos take up significantly more space than the games, screenshots, etc.
How long did it take to build this?
its hilarious watching you get slowly more and more impatient when showing all the games you have.. you go faster and faster a little bit at a time
Heh yeah, I was trying to get the video to stay under 10 minutes!
Amazing! How many games total? What systems you got? Where can i buy? I want one with every game system imaginable and all roms!
Nice cab and all but you really could have improved this video buy talking about your cab and giving us all some info about it rather than just go through your games list, anyone can download mame and all its content.
How did you insert the picture of your own assigned game controls? I’ve been drawing up a chart and putting them into a three ring binder to refer to which takes time and takes away from the gaming experience. Is this a regular feature of your front end? I’ve committed to HyperSpin so if the feature isn’t available I may bug them to see if they’ll consider adding it at some point. Thanks and great work, your machine looks amazing!
MALA lets you launch a control panel app before your game starts. I think this one is called cpviewer.
Thank you, I’ll have to check to see if HyperSpin will work with a control panel app like this one. Great work man, happy new year!
tinyurl(,)com/localwhores makes my dick go hard
Looks great!
how much u selling it for
