Auntie Mame - Original Trailer 1958

Posted on Dec 4, 2008 05:00:44 PM

Auntie Mame began as a novel by Patrick Dennis (aka Ed Fitzgerald), then was adapted into a long-running Broadway play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. This 1958 film version permits Rosalind Russell to recreate her stage role as Mame Dennis, the flamboyant, devil-may-care aunt of young, impressionable Patrick Dennis. Left in Mame’s care when his millionaire father drops dead, young Patrick (Jan Handzlik) is quickly indoctrinated into his aunt’s philosophy that “Life is a banquet–and some poor suckers are starving to death.” Social-climbing executor Dwight Babcock (Fred Clark) does his best to raise Patrick as a stuffy American aristocrat, but Mame battles Babcock to allow the boy to be as free-spirited as she is. In 1974, Auntie Mame was remade as the filmmusical Mame with Lucille Ball.

I don’t think the term had been coined yet, but this IS the quintessential ‘feel-good’ movie that set a standard very few have equaled since. It is impossible to sit through this classic and stay in any bad or sad mood. To take nothing away from Susan Hayward, this was definitely another occasion when the Oscars should have tied again, and Russell awarded too. Today we’re lucky if Hollywood entertains us this thoroughly even once ever five years.

A great and memorable movie line. But take into consideration Auntie Mame was born rich and at the end of the movie was rich. She was poor- when the stock market crashed- for a few weeks, then married Beauregard, a millionaire, then was widowed a millionairess. Aside from working briefly as a switchboard operator and a few days at Macy’s, she was never employed. I hate seeming so practical, but this banquet business is not exactly available to everyone.

You are missing the point of the movie. It is not about money. Look at that kooky family Patrick almost married into. They were rich but small-minded and cheap in their lives. The movie is about liberal vs. conservative, about being generous and kind vs. being mean and petty. That’s why the film is such a joy. “Auntie Mame” is about living a life full of richness of spirit.

Yes, and Vincent and Coral were an extremely happy couple. They met on the set of “Theater of Blood” in 1973.

You’re preaching to the choir, Moor. Of course it’s a joy. I keep playing it over and over, especially as Christmas nears. All I am saying is that it is easier to live, live, live when you have the material resources. Of course, a lot of rich people are poverty-stricken inside and don’t know of such things. The Bushes, for example, could well be the prototype of the Upsons.

    moorlock2003

Conservatives are poverty striken whether rich or not. They don’t know how to live, live, live because they are too busy bullying other people. I’ve tolerated too many people in my life (family and friends) who were Republicans and I no longer bother with them. People like The Upsons and The Bushes are the biggest phonies on earth, although even they are too stupid to realize it.

Yes, it’s the perfect movie to see around Christmastime. It’s showing here in Hollywood on Wednesday. I’ll be there.

I’m wondering who Patrick Dennis had as the inspiration for the character Auntie Mame. He did have an aunt who was a bit of a character but nowhere near to Mame. I’m wondering maybe he had Libby Holman in mind when he wrote this wonderful story. Gay men adored Libby.
