First install this repo pack;

then update fedora-extras.repo;
su
yourpassword
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-extras.repo
now erase the text in the file and replace with the fedora-extras code found at the following page;

Scroll down to the code box that starts with [fedora-extras]. The text in that box is what you will replace the original text with.
save it and close gedit.
now in the terminal and type;
su
yourpassword
yum install sdlmame
once installed you will need to edit the ini file
type in the terminal
su
yourpassword
gedit /etc/mame/mame.ini
open with text editor change the following;
change multithreading from 0 to 1
change video from opengl to soft
change joystick from 0 to 1
also add
autoframeskip 1
to the very bottom of the file. Then save quit and type mame in the terminal. Enjoy.

can killer instinct 2 work with this?
hey um, how do you get to choose a character on the simpsons game? cause the copy i have is set to one credit for each character.
find the 2 player rom for the game and add it to the rom folder with the 4 player rom. you can also configure the controls so that your controller controls a different player. e.g. configure your joypad for player 2 for homer, 3 for bart, 4 for lisa. finding the 2 player rom is the better option.

its a bad rom dump. try to reacquire the file from another source.

yes its safe. yes you need a keyboard and mouse. there is a guide in the description to help you along your way.

yes you switch between linux and the xmb. see my other videos.

Yes you can install ubuntu instead of YD. My guide will not work on ubuntu however.
I just installed my PS3 with Xubuntu 9.04. Also I tried SDLMame. The speed is really a disaster in 720P resolution. (I have applied GPU swap magic, too)Maybe my next choice is to install YDL or return for my old XBOX.

ive gotten it working - BUT SDLMAME runs at half speed! nothing i do can change it. somehow i imagine it needs patching but i cant find how to do this on linux. anyone help?

did you make the changes to the ini file as directed the description. also what video mode are you ruining at. The higher the resolution the greater the performance hit. I am running at 720p in the video.

i was able to install the repo pack but now i have a new problem. when i did the

it seems that fedora changed the address to their repos thus invalidating that park of the pack. I will send you a message with the fix.

I suggest using 720p (video mode 3). to add multiple resolution options to kboot see my guide in the description.

hey what up sir. I got youtube working and i got snes working. but i can not get mame going. the part i am having problems on is getting the terminal to recognize the mame rom path. i dont know what to do. I made a folder and named it “roms” and it’s in the same where mame is located, in the system directory. I also read where you said to use the text editor to open mame.ini and it’s not that easy to open mame.ini using text editor….how do you do that as well? thanks for the tutorial
the text editor is called gedit. Edit the mame ini by typing su, yourpassword, then gedit /etc/mame/mame.ini as seen in the tutorial.
I tried that but the su doesn’t work. i even tried “su -” without the quotes and that doesn’t work. All of the videos you and several… several other people have showcasing what you guys have on your PS3 and there’s not one video showcasing how to do this, how to get a mame running on the PS3. If i knew how, i would gladly make a video tutorial.
you dont use any quotes in my commands. once you type su you should get a blank line. that line is where you enter your root password.

I just finished installing this on my ps3, dude it runs slow as shit!!! and most the games don’t work. how did you ever get it running like that?

In that you are just getting ps3 be sure that it is a phat/shiny model as the ps3 slim does not support otheros/linux. No issues post install the two coexist just fine. I have a video demoing that aspect.

Hi Thank you!! I was planning on getting the new slim design. I was not aware of those issues as I’m new to the PS3 scene along with adding Linux to it. I know computers so it should be to hard for me. Is ubuntu-8.10-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso doable on these new PS3’s I really like these new ones and it would be easier for me than having to track down the shiney fat one. Any suggestions?
NVM I just heard somewhere that there is no Linux compatibility with the new slim….THAT SUCKS!
there is actually a linux disto just for the ps3. It’s yellowdog. just google it and you can find it pretty easy. However the new ps3s do not a seperate OS
SO I’m back and I bought the Phat! I don’t have bkwards compatibility but I don’t care. So what’s the best Linux OS to install on PS3 I’m not an expert and I like to hack things so what would suit me?

sony ceased development on the other os hypervisior before the slims release. The slim has changes in the hardware which would require changes to the hypervisior. . No more funding or development for the hypervisior no linux on the ps3 slim. Sony removed the other os feature from the slim as a cost saving measure.

Hi mate, have a few questions, first what are you using to connect to the CRT? I have RGB Scart being in the UK but this gives me a squashed picture i.e as if it is 16:9 on a 4:3 tv and the green screen that you get if you watch a dvd or blu ray. If you are using RGB scart how did you connect?Also what is the quality like of the emulators? I have an Xbox at the moment but would be nice to make the PS3 a media centre for everything, esp for PS1 emulation and on the CRT tv or via hdmi on hdtv

Since MAME uses software to utilize 3D graphics, do 3D arcade games (i.e Tekken or Soul Edge) also work? If so do you get a decent frame-rate?
@18CaStRaDoMiS89 some 3d games may work but the frame rate would be so bad that the games would be unplayable.
@efaustus9 I’ve seen someone run Bloody Roar 2 on MAME and it ran at about between 15-30 fps (better than I thought but annoying to try and play).BTW what would you suggest YDL,Ubuntu,or Fedora for PS3. I’ve heard Fedora is the most popular while Ubuntu had the best functions and YDL had the best compatibility.
@18CaStRaDoMiS89 Both Ubuntu and YDL are good distros for the ps3. I prefer YDL myself for the ps3.
@ryougadeka I am using an HDMI cable and I installed YDL at a resolution of 720p. The set used in this video is a 1080i HD CRT TV. They are not really mass produced anymore but they do exists. The quality of the emulators is generally good as long as you are emulating systems before the PSONE generation. There is no gpu acceleration in ps3 linux so 3D based systems are mostly unplayable.
