If you think about it, Rita had it all. She was a good dramatic and comedic actress, she was the best female dancer in Hollywood, I don’t know about her singing voice as it was usually dubbed…

But she had a mystery to her, effortless class, elegantly sexy, a beautiful lady, and that face!! Perhaps the best face ever to grace Hollywood!!

Way before my time, but she was clearly one very classy act.

If I met a woman like this, along with MARILYN of course, I’d become STRAIGHT in a split sec! Jesus! Beat this level of sexiness, feminity e sensuality! Rita and Marilyn were just amazing! And also had such a sensitivity within them! And where is such GRACEFUL,powerful and ELEGANT femininity these days?! We’ve really lost any sense of what is really sexy and sensual ecfeminine!!! GRACE can be part of sexiness and sensuality! Instead, we are surrounded by so much vulgarity and cheap sexiness!!

The voice belonged to Anita Ellis; Jean Louis did the costume. Rita was born in Brooklyn: her father was Spanish and her mother was Irish-American. Fred Astaire said she was his greatest partner.

Yes, Michael is a GENIUS!!! Fred Astaire and many others immensely talanted people were his idols, they inspired him but he never imitated anyone! He is THE ONE and UNIQUE. It seems like he had an endless number of creative ideas in his mind. And the way they put this scene in “This is it” proves it.

Um, ok, so what I’m gathering from all of these comments is that MJ performed this song in This is It? I’d so much rather watch Rita Hayworth do it.

    almj9

No, you’re wrong :) He didn’t perform this song. He incorporated part of this clip into an intro to Smooth Criminal for the shows. And he is edited in the clip!

Can we stop talking about Michael? lol He’s great, but seriously… This is a Rita Hayworth video. :) Even if it is related, its turned in to petty bickering. :D:D:D:D:DGod Bless Amy

    AAMLfan

Firstly, you assumed wrong. Secondly, your second comment was unnecessary. No one’s attacking Rita here and MJ’s not trying to steal her spotlight.Michael Jackson wouldn’t perform this and the guy is a fan of these old legends just as much as you are, if not more.

  97. November 8, 2009 02:41 am

He was digitally placed in the audience, he didn’t sing it. He cought her glove, though.

“Gilda” was shot in 1945, after Rita had already given birth to her and Orson’s daughter Rebecca in December 1944. She was definitely not pregnant in this scene. Rita was pregnant while shooting “Tonight and Every Night” ;-)

Damn, she makes that strapless dress look good. When she’s holding that beautiful hair up at 1:05 with those long black gloves, wearing that choker necklace and that strapless dress–it reminds me of those “What is sexy?” ads by Victoria’s Secret. Well, THAT is sexy.

It’s interesting to see 1940s style SEXUALITY and eroticism. This scene is so imitated and worshiped. But for Rita, this was just another day at work, it’s as if she did it with her eyes closed. No effort. Yet, so affective. POWERFUL STUFF. What dreams are made of. To put it simply, if you want to see a beautiful woman, you can start and end here. MJ knew.

…oh, and of course it’s what happens right after this dance that makes this scene SO A-M-A-Z-I-N-G and iconic.

  209. March 12, 2010 11:17 pm

Yeah, that was a nice time. I mean: we could beat up queers (arrest them at least), we didn’t have to look at black people (they weren’t even allowed to eat by us), we could rape and beat our wives with impunity, etc. etc.Now women do things like wear pants and other yucky things and men are in touch with their feelings and I can’t slap a black dude for talking to me. LAME!!!Oh, wait, no it’s not.

  210. March 13, 2010 12:11 am
    toyrocketastronaut

Excuse me but contrary to “popular belief”, those things you mentioned were the EXCEPTION not the rule! It was a civil society! People were NORMAL, there was manners and decency. Society didn’t tolerate degeneracy. Maybe that is the heart of the matter for you huh? That society would have shunned the likes of yourself? You think it’s better now? With debauchery, crime, hard drugs, women that look like dock workers and men that look like girls?

  211. March 13, 2010 12:47 am
    JWWells

The same people who “didn’t tolerate degeneracy” hated movies like this. In the eyes of “mannered,” “decent” people, Rita Hayworth was decadent and wicked. If anyone had listened, we’d never have had this scene. There was no ideal past where people loved the things you like and hated the things you hate. Women were not barred from law, politics, and science as an “exception.” Blacks were not forced to the back of the bus as an “exception.” These were rules, and bad ones.

  212. March 13, 2010 01:17 am
    kives1985

Debauchery is fun. Crime has always been around, and isn’t correlated with debauchery: see Europe’s lower violent crime rate despite their sexier atmosphere. Hard drugs have been around forever too, although they were actually in larger circulation back in the “old times.” I mean Coca Cola used to have cocaine in it. And alcohol, really, is probably worse for people than cocaine, heroin, and especially pot.

  213. March 13, 2010 01:26 am
    kives1985

So yes, it is a lot better now than then.

  214. March 13, 2010 01:31 am
    toyrocketastronaut

Well, you’re deranged if you think that. It’s awful now compared to then, and if it continues this way, in the years to come it’s only going to get worse. Maybe one day to the point where even YOU will say, “this is horrible!” What has happened to our society!? This is sick! Stop! But then it will be too late for you. An you will be fucked.

  215. March 13, 2010 02:24 am
    1940semochild

I see your point and getting nostalgic for an ideal past that never existed just because the movies presented those images; in fact, I always remind people of that. But I think when people say “I want to back to X decade” they don’t literally mean that because of historical realities. I think it has more to do with pop cultural things: music, movies, fashion, etc, wishing those things were popular now.

  216. March 13, 2010 02:39 am
    kives1985

Look, the only thing that sucks today is the economy, and that has to do with financial speculation not “debauchery.”

  217. March 13, 2010 02:51 am
    kives1985

It just pisses me off that people type stuff like, “back when women didn’t have to show skin to be sexy.” The reason why Rita Hayworth never showed any skin was because she couldn’t.And no, I don’t think it’s just opining for pop culture. It’s a conservative revision of history. People are still pissed off about the sixties.

  218. March 14, 2010 03:18 pm
    1940semochild

Which is true even the part about being pissed over the 60s but for every “conservative” revision of history there is a “liberal” revison of history. History will always be distorted by someone for whatever reason because it fits their POVs, bias, politics, opinions, etc.For myself there are some things I like about the past but I don’t pine for it at all. Never have. I’m thankful Im living in the 21st century instead of the early 20th like any sane person would be.

  219. March 14, 2010 03:27 pm
    1940semochild

But for every conservative revision of history there is a liberal revison of history as well. People will always interpret history certain things because it fits their POVs, bias, politics, etc. Being subjective about history can be dangerous. Nostalgia is an example. For myself there are some things I do like about the past (more in a pop cultural sense like I said) but I know that we need to be living in the 21st because it is better. I too get annoyed when fmy friends pine for the past.

Absolutely fantastic. Very clean yet, EXTREMELY sexy. Rita Hayworth had got to be what the cartoonists for Jessica Rabbit were trying to duplicate in the song Do Right.Peggy Lee did a good job on Do Right, but I wish Rita Hayworth could have interpreted it with her feminine wiles.

i have a schools project in art, on choosing an acctress, in black and white movies. and i choose Rita Hayworth, i didnt find så much about her. we are suppose to draw them and write down the facial structure, så pleazzze, could someone tell me what her trademark was, what was her face features, was eyes shape. just the face.

    white0nr1ce

Something interesting about her face - for the film industry to look more American she plucked her hairline back. Look into her earlier films and she has sort of a widows peak. This was one of her more famous dance segments because the way she removes her glove, and innuendos all throughout Gilda were just very risque for that time!

  266. June 4, 2010 08:47 pm
    TheAnnexGal

@mushroom313 - The part in GILDA she’s know for is in her bedroom. Her beau (or husband… can’t remember) says, “Gilda, are you decent?” Gilda then flips her hair over and says, “Me?”.Go to jonjo99’s account. There’s a clip of it there.

What’s so damn sexy about this is she don’t give it all away like these so called, “stars” of today, I’m 19 and I hate what sexy is supposed to be in this day and time. She would be sexy doing housework people, yellow rubber gloves, bandanna, old mom jeans the whole 9 yards, she’d make it look sexy…My god she makes taking a glove off look hot as hell!! Bow down to this woman. She makes me so proud to be a Libra. =) Look up what a woman should be in the dictionary and you’ll find her picture…

  291. June 26, 2010 04:37 pm
    MrFarcry1966

@MrsAisha86 Yeah, you’re female and undoubtedly hideous, your vote doesn’t count–ugly women and gay men have views about what’s attractive in a heterosexual woman that are all about their own insecurities, a fact evident in every one of those ‘next hot model’ shows. Stick your photo up here so we can see how much of this ‘evaluation’ is about your own hatred of women 1000 times more beautiful than you are in your wildest dreams.

  292. June 26, 2010 04:40 pm
    MrFarcry1966

@georgegiftos Because the people making those evaluations have no taste–even after seeing this, they will continue to evaluate female sex quotient in the terms set for them by today’s pornographic industry (which includes not only the skin rags but virtually everything on MTV and the rest of television). They are robots who have no understanding of humanity.Lady Gaga is to sex as a regurgitated McDonalds cheeseburger is to food.

it’s kind of funny having this on and the vuvuzela at the same time. But I agree with what people are saying about actresses today and back then. I mean, there are some talented actresses but they don’t make them like they used too and this is from a 14 year old.

  298. July 1, 2010 09:34 pm
    Luciusdeatheater

@MissGarland18 I completely agree! For the most part, to be “sexy” by today’s standards, you have to be skimpy, trashy and slutty. I completely reject that. I wear my hair in marcel waves and pin curls because I adore the golden era when true talent was appreciated.

  299. July 1, 2010 10:10 pm
    MissGarland18

@Luciusdeatheater, thats great, I’m really happy to see someone else out there who agress with me LOL I like what you said about the golden era, that really is when talent was truly appreciated, when people actually HAD talent!!, Every one of the ’stars’ I see today are talentless and they give everything away, there’s no mystery or real beauty, their all plastic and fake and it’s it’s so sad. but I’m glad to see you feel the same way & I bet your hair is pretty like that haha, old 40’s glam =)

Rita Hayworth had many more difficult dances than this dance - from the numbers she did with her father starting at age 13, to those intricate numbers with Fred Astaire or the acrobatics she did with Gene Kelly. And yet, she is at her best here - all alone. By herself, telling a story through her body, through movement. She is timeless and this moment will last forever as the story of a women taking back the power she gave to men. F*** Yeah Rita! You rock!

  302. July 2, 2010 07:10 am
    updog88

@MrsAisha86 for playing a drunk, pissed-off stripper, she’s pretty graceful. And you are totally wrong about her looking common for those days. This look, this dress, and her sexuality was totally revolutionary and way ahead of the times.

  303. July 2, 2010 07:18 am
    updog88

@wapagold her trademark was 1) in color her peaches and cream complexion, auburn red hair, and red lips - like a pinup girl. 2) in Black and white, she was still very beautiful, but her persona changed and she was more a vamp. If you had to draw her, she has long hair, a low, square forehead, full heart-shaped mouth, and one eyebrow is arched ore then the other, suggesting flirtation.

that great song was actually sanged by Anita Kert Ellis an actress - singer from Canada , Rita Hayworth is only moving her lips while beinf dubed by Anita Kert , her moves -dance and looks i must agree are as wonderfull as the song that Anita is actually singing !( Rita Hayworth who was a good at dancing was never a singer and was always dubed by other ladys who knew how to sing ..)

@wapagold I don’t know how I would decribe her features, structure that is, except to say ,gorgous, but I know your looking for more than that, ha. “Google” her then click into images and just study her face. I’ll give you some background on her parents; her father was Spanish (born in Spain) and her mother was Irish. Good choice in choosing Rita. Good luck in your project.

Look everyone! No Botox Injections, Trout Pout lips, (collagen injections). Hint, Hint Kim Kardashian, Pamela Anderson, Lisa Rinna (she should sue that doctor ) Meg Ryan, and many more. I know that they didn’t have Botox, Collagen back in 1946 (thank God), but my point is, why fixed something that’s not broken and if you happen to get older, yes it’s going to happen, age gracefully unless you want to look like Joan Rivers, well, it’s a free country. Thank you Goddess.

This number and “Amado Mio” were added after a rough screening of Gilda. Harry Cohn originally wanted to make a dramtic film with Rita that contained no musical performances but when he and Charles Vidor the director of GIlda saw the final cut it was decided that “Gilda” needed to showcase her other “Talents”. Glad they did!!! This musical number is now a classic!!! And the dress, a fashion staple!!!!

    MsLoyal12

its so amazing to me how people really thought and still think that this woman could dance. Beautiful yes. Dancer absolutely not! And this statement is not just based off of this number alone.

  311. July 15, 2010 11:12 pm
    Ange1sChi1de

@MsLoyal12 she was actually a professionally trained dancer. That’s how she got into movies! Her parents owned a dance studio, and eventually she danced with her dad as his partner in movies. Look it up! And maybe actually WATCH some earlier clips of her dancing with her parents, not what HOLLYWOOD wanted her to dance. Ever heard of a cheorographer?? They had them back then too, you know!

  312. July 16, 2010 01:33 am
    MsLoyal12

@Ange1sChi1de the fact that this woman was “professionally trained” is even more of an insult to audiences. There are plenty of “trained” dancers who look horrible on stage. Its not about training its about being talented and gifted. and if you think training is all you need in the art of performing then you know nothing about performing. yes thanks to wikipedia i already knew what you proudly pointed out. parents being dancers and owning dance studios doesn’t =great dancer. sorry.

Fun, flirty, and confident with a nice figure to boot. She didn’t need to be sleezy to be sexy. She didn’t need to be a whore to be hot. Todays “starlets” could learn a lot from Rita. But they’re stupid as well as slutty.

  319. July 22, 2010 08:33 am
    elc1960

@georgegiftos Yes! Thank you. Too many performers take the easy way out and go over the top in their exhibitionistic behavior (which is what passes for modern sexuality). It should be obvious that subtlety is the key; It’s what you DON’T show that arouses more than the skin. You could use the same approach in horror movies as well - show less to scare more instead of pushing the violence and blood envelope. Thank you again for your statement; it speaks volumes.

  320. July 22, 2010 08:38 am
    elc1960

@checkabalance She was the inspiration for Jessica Rabbit - if you can get the “Roger Rabbit” DVD watch the bonus features - they come right out and state it for the record. The only difference was the size of Jessica’s butt and breasts. Otherwise, pure Rita Hayworth.

Rita´s original appearance was latin so in order to attract american audience and not cast her in stereotypical latin roles, the Columbia executives decided to dye her brunette hair to red and undergo a electrolysis treatment to broaden her forehead. She was a shy und insecure woman, and had a struggling relationship with Columbia tycoon Harry Cohn. She suffered from alcoholism and had financial problems.

Back then, when it came to the word “sexy”, IMO it was all about class, staying true to yourself, loving yourself along with others and, being the best that you can be. Now it’s all about booty shaking, getting money, wanting power, and letting it all hang out. That’s not sexy, that’s trashy.

There is NO ONE like her. There was only one RITA. In this world of wannabes, fakes, women who give all the mystery away, this lady shows us what is meant by the word WOMAN. She is hands-down the most beautiful and talented woman ever to grace the screen. Take a good look, we shall not see her like again. Thank God we have her films, may God grant her the peace and love that was so elusive to her on earth.
