I am not trying to bring down Flo’s memory. I am advocating for the truth to be told. The idea that Diana Ross was reaponsible for all of Flo’s woes in just plainfalse. Diana Ross was themost abused by Berry of them all. Even Mary said so in her book. They often felt sorry for her. All of the girls were talented. Diet pills are drugs.

Yes. Diana did pull at Flo’s pony tail. She was not taunting her about her flopped records. Flo didn’t even have the contract yet. Please read JRT’s latest bio on Ross. She told Cholly Atkins, Mary and others that she thought Berry should help Flo’s career.

You consider me pulling down Flo’s memory because I AM NOT ALWAYS IN AGREEMENT with what you and Mr. Gardner ahve to say about Flo’s talent, experiences, etc.

I never said Diana was responsible and never implied that!I am just saying that somethings were so unnecessary and Flo did try regardless of who tried to stop her and I have the uttermost respect for her for that and what she has contributed to music. The Supremes. The First Lady of The Supremes RIP

Florence seems very uncomfortable here. Mary said on an interview once that Flo just didn’t like the fluff. But if you notice at around 4:08 into the performance, she seems to be finally comin’ around. To beautiful and died way to soon.

Mary said in her book that this was Flo last gig with them on television before they kicked her that is maybe why Flo was not to much into it because she knew what waas going really.

This is not Flo’s last television appearance. That would come a few days later when The Supremes performed “The Happening” on The Tonight Show. Check my Supremes Medley for a snippet of that appearance.

Of course it was live. There were almost always live. Diana is the consummate entertainer.

That’s because Flo didn’t like how the group was forced to do that Hollywood-like mainstream stuff. She thought it was fake. It might have seemed fake but it worked and fit Diana’s voice and demeanor like a glove.

jimjeffjeanine puhleeez, I would love to have been abused like Diana Ross was. What on earth are you talking about? Diana Ross was an still is a super trouper, and perfectionist and didn’t stop till she got it perfect, even if she collapsed from exhaustion. That’s what it took to get to the top back in those days. You had to earn it.

The Supremes were never better than when Flo sang really strong against Diana……..with Mary’s help. And Mame is a perfect example of that.

I find it interesting how Diana’s voice didn’t need to be powerful because of it’s piercing quality and very high pitch.

@best1forward I think that’s one of the reasons they became so popular. Not being afraid to sing anythiing means they became more marketable and popular with different age groups and cultures instead of just appealing to one. The other acts at Motown weren’t so willing to sing different styles, but then again, perhaps The Supremes were the only act that actually sounded appropriate singing standards and show tunes

@antoineboi I don’t get all the anti-Diana stuff either. It seemed as if she pushed her way, when she was just doing what she was told. These anti Diana people are just people who never understood the mass appeal of her voice and charisma. They don’t get it and never will

They didn’t need those male dancers in this skit. They look silly…. like some kind of last minute decision. Flo looks kind of FAT

    RedRoosterRoad

@SpazChat No she doesn’t. What has her weight got to do with this song anyway?

  44. May 28, 2011 12:16 pm
    terrybigteekemp

@RedRoosterRoad I don’t understand this Flo is fat stuff either. I have never seen a picture or video of Florence being overweight. Maybe our definition of fat and theirs are different. Florence always had a very lovely, voluptuous figure even in her later years. Or as Flo herself said,”I was pretty damned stacked”.

I like Supremes & though, I know it was the ‘in’ thing 2 do pop standards in the 60s, I find some of their stuff rather corny. Nothing wrong with diversity but Motown went overboard in pushing this stuff down our throats. We got that they were a black group striving 2 get mainstream success but sometimes, it looked like a chore. I’m sure they were all tired of singing these kinds of songs. Young folks want 2 sing their own songs not all this old timey stuff all the time!

@royalsoulness diana and mary have both often said that they loved to sing these songs. i think the opposite of what you say is true. they prob. got tired of singing their own songs over and over. mary still says to this day that she loved doing these show tunes.

@terrybigteekemp have you read mary’s book? it was really hard to talk about alcaholism and manic depression in those days. imagine if it had been revealed in 1967 that florence, one of the great supremes, was bordering on alcoholism and depression. it was more acceptable, though entirely wrong, to say that she was overweight or wanted to leave and start a family.
