Rita Hayworth was so beautiful! I love her to bits!
Marilyn and Rita were different, and cannot be compared. They were both good actresses, but to be fair Rita was a better dancer but Marilyn was a better singer but regardless they are both awesome.
The only thing that annoys me about this song is her ‘playing’ of the guitar. (What a star though.)
Rita didn’t sing any of her songs, she was the master of lip singing
Taking into consideration Rita is latin decent its understandable why she is such a good dancer…i would hav to say I agree with you that they shouldnt be compared though Rita wins me 100 folds more than Marilyn can ever
I like both Rita and Marilyn, they both had their talents. Rita was good dancer, especially in her movies with Fred Astaire. Marilyn was good singer, especially in River of No Return and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. I do not think the two can be compared, it’s like apples and oranges. One thing is for certain though, they were both amazing.

I agree. As for “her own guitar playing”…. Please, just watch her hands.

Rita Hayworth is still the most ebautiful actress Hollywood ever had.

I just got the movie from netflix. IN the extras they had a mini documentary about the movie. Rita didn’t sing this or any other song in her movies. She was also classy enough to let anyone know who asked and always gave the credit to the real singer.

and unique as well
and unique as well
Actually she didn’t sing anything in this movie, I saw a making of a few days ago, where they say who sang it, but I forgot the name…And btw it looks really crappy how she simulates playing guitar ^^
back in the days they were talented and beautiful nowadays they are either one or the other or none
and most time nether.
Rita is so beautiful and so talented.
Un filmino niente male….
I don’t care if she or Howdy Doody is actually singing this; if this scene doesn’t get a man’s heart thumping, he is ready for the bone pile ( or he’s a limp wristed pansy)!
lol of all the film noir we watch in school atm, this is the best. haha
She is so beautiful, love this song version
the singer who song all Rita’s songs is called Anita Ellis. You can buy her CD’s with all these songs.
I want the tabs to this song.
Put the…
5am and he can’t believe it? I wake up at 4:30am everyday…..arrrgggggggg
Rita Hayworth assured she sang this song. I guess she sang this part, while Anita Ellis sang the second part, when Rita danced the famous glove strip-tease.
soooo soft … gentle! wow
God cant find the tabs anywhere
‘I’ve got this on my ipod and looooove it. I also have the faster version too.
magical
I have read that Rita sang this herself, but to my ears, it sounds like Anita Ellis. Rita may have sung the song during the filming, but it was typical to dub over the singer’s voice using a professional singer. Ellis was a total pro at adapting her own voice to the voice of the actress. I read a story where she had overdubbed Carol Landis, and Landis couldn’t tell it wasn’t her own voice and was pleased at how good she sounded. Rita had a nice voice, but very small and limited in range.
they do sound pretty different
Why did he have to interrupt??
not true; i repeat it again and again; i have the interview of 1972 where rita herself says it is her original voice…AND this voice is much more husky and darker than ellis´voice, like ritas gorgous speaking voice was. She had the voice for the guitar-version, but not for a great orchestral version.
And I repeat it once more: It’s Ellis’ voice here. Please Yann, just compare it with “Please Don’t Kiss Me” from “The Lady from Shanghai” - it has the same intimate sound and it’s the same voice and definitely not Rita’s. No matter what Rita said or Gene Ringgold claimed (he obviously knew the interview as well). Why should Columbia deny it even today when they could make good cash with such a legend? By the way, Rita’s speaking voice is actually not very “dark” in my opinion.
Also when you look at her guitar playing you’ll notice that it doesn’t match 100% with what you here. And it’s also pretty much impossible to play the guitar with such long fingernails on the left hand, trust me, I know what I’m talking about
ok you know it better than rita herself !i believe rita hayworth not you. this ladywould not lie.point.
Oh, come on, Yann, we don’t know how much Rita was already into Alzheimer’s in 1972. And as I already told you before and like somebody else mentioned, Rita might have sang herself while shooting the scene but was dubbed afterwards without knowing. She also said in that very same interview that her full name was Margarita Carmen Dolores Cansino while her birth certificate PROVES that “Dolores” was not part of her name!
“dolores” means “pain” - she might have added that, who knows, because of its significance in her childhood ?
I know where you have that idea from. It doesn’t have any substance. The way she said it was proud and amused, not sad in any sense of the word.
well, she was a sad and depressive woman at the end, thats a fact…she had a hard and unhappy youth, thats also a fact and she had no luck with men, thats a fact either; Rita was along with Marilyn the most fragile and tragic star of all Hollywoodstars !
Well, I wanna see you being cheerful and happy when you’re about to lose your memory, your personality, your speech, your everything! You obviously believe a certain speculative (and that’s all it is) book and that’s the really sad thing here! Most Hollwood stars had unhappy marriages. Doris Day would be another example, I don’t think it’s right to paint everything black. Rita had lots of happy moments in her life and told even reporters “Whatever you write about me, don’t make it sad!”
she´s perfect
well exactly that sentence says it all doesn´t it ?why do you think she needed to say that ? a happy person does not have the need to tell people that they are happy, they just are !
No, it doesn’t and your conclusion doesn’t make sense.Rita was obviously well aware that the press was using her to sell a tragic story to the public - sad stories and scandals sell best, you know - that’s why she said it so that they stop dramatizing her life! I don’t understand why you prefer her having an image of a victim. Rita was by all accounts a very dignified person. I don’t think she would have liked to be considered a “victim”, except for being a victim of a terrible desease.
By the way, according to your theory she lied while saying this sentence. But didn’t you also say “this lady would not lie.point.”? (They say “period” in English not “point” at the end
AND she was a victim all her life, used and abused by her father ( and i do not mean sexually but mentally like today f.e. Agassi ) , harry cohn, edward judson, beaten by dick haymes, cheated on by welles and ali khan after 1 year of marriage and while pregnant; she always chose mean conceited macho men ;she said in a late interview that she is ” attracted to mean characters”. She really had no luck with men all her life.
To the poster of this video - sorry for getting so off-topic but oentschi is just such a pain!
YOU were getting off topic again because you are an angry person, i went back to the real topic ( see below ) ! I have a great sense of humour and everyone likes me for that, the only people who cannot deal with me and a my sarcasm, are boring or bitter or complexed people !
Now you’re being funny - ridiculously funny, hahahaha!
na jetzt lachst du ja endlich wieder !!!über Dich selbst ?
It’s enough already, honey!I’d say a humerous person doesn’t have to say he is funny, he just is! Sorry!BTW, beautiful Rita! She is just wonderful!
hahahazweit-profil ?
Rita still my love after all the years! Was diese merkwürdige Diskussion hier betrifft — was soll der Scheiß?
is it really her singing? it’s beautiful
yes its her, if one believes her, she said so in an interview of 1972 at the san francisco festival hayworth retrospective someone asked her is she ever sang herself and she said that this version is hers !
…and her own guitarplaying also !
@Aidooosh No, not her I’m afraid, its rumored this is the only recording of her singing but its not true, its all explained in the DVD extras.
Rita H. didn’t sing,it was another singer, you can read it on the wikipedia page of the movie
The voice ist actually von Anita Ellis.
Shoulda shown just a moment longer so you could see her throw the guitar through that lovely etched glass pane.

I just saw Gilda for the first time tonight and I loved it. Rita was so beautiful and talented in it. She was one hell of a dancer as well. I love and miss you Rita!
Actually, this is the only time in the movie, where Rita H is singing herself
I loved it as well when she threw the guitar through the etched. It just showed what a feisty woman she was.The movie Gilda is my favorite Rita movie. I could watch it a hundred times if I let myself.
this is my fav glenn ford film and i know its all about rita but i love glenn ford and i think the chemistry between the two are brilliant and the dialogue dont know if i spelt that right but anyway the screen writer should have gotten an oscar
she had a grace and elegance that the actresses today cant even touch or begin to ascend to..
i like how the chords change and her hands stay in the same place at 1:00
i want ritas hair! its sooo pretty=-)
She’s so pretty
There is a beautiful video about Rita from Breton2Robert that is called ” Rita Hayworth: Remembering Her talent and Beauty “. nice work and original

she is singing?I mean- it’s Rita’s voice or it is a lipdub..?
This is really her. I don’t know why they had someone else sing for her in the nightclub version. This is my favorite.
@Kela89 It’s really her.
According to Wikipedia for Rita Hayworth:”Another source of “gnawing resentment” for Hayworth was her studio’s failure to train her to sing or even encourage her to learn how to sing.[16] She was dubbed. The public didn’t know this closely guarded secret, and she ended up embarrassed because she was constantly asked by the troops to sing.[17]“
can Rita be any more gorgeous? I think not.
who is mame?
This version is REALLY GOOD! Rita is amazing!
@ivriliderforever17 Isnt it sad how boring, repetitive and untalented people have become. … Where are the old movies!
@beanyboo123 I thought she sang and danced in vaudeville…thats news to me!
@beanyboo123 If Wiki is correct, You have to wonder why she did not just take singing lessons.addie
una de mis pelis favoritas!!
Is she really singing or is she being dubbed?
@MrHochstapler No, she was dubbed
@MrHochstapler she’s being dubbed
@ambientspacem it’s a slang word for “me” in those days
For the record, it’s said that, that is Rita actually singing with the guitar although the song version she sings later is another singer
She put the V in Vamp
…the personification of beauty
If you have to ask if she is being dubbed you’re an asshole.
Anita Ellis, I believe, sang for her in the rest of the film, but I read in a book which covers all her movies that she might be singing in this scene herself. She had a sweet voice. She did sing with Carol Burnett on her variety show.
@AtreyuNukus Wow is that really Rita singing ? because I think her voice is beautiful and I prefer this version to the later one in the film.xox.
she is talented as a danced but her voice is dubbed and she is not playing anything in the guitar,,,a product of the promoter…her dancing skills were really not exploited..and she was very good there…fact of the biz.
it still amazes me the lengths she went to to look more caucasian :/ such a shame that’s what you had to do back in old hollywood.
@pacmanswang1 Uh..I am pretty sure she was mostly white..her father was from Spain (most people in Spain are white) and her mom was of irish and english descent.
Tickles going into the ears. Rita sings Mame slow…
@serp94080 her dad was a famous spanish dancer
I love the lyrics and Rita was a LADY. Today is rare to find grace on stars women.
wow i cant believe my comment from well over a year ago got so many thumbs up! it is still one of my favorite scenes and favorite song =D
this is a nice song…
She was so lovely! A lot of people don’t believe she was actually singing in this scene, but she was. It makes me wonder why she was never able to do her own singing in everything else, she clearly had the talent!
I doubt this was a tough scene for Steven Geray (Uncle Pio) to “act” in.
@ivriliderforever17 Absolutely. Now it’s easy to promote a “star”. Back then, they had to be really worth it for the investors to take interest.
After reading an article with interviews of her daughter, it’s my understanding that this is the song played during her funeral procession. It’s her actual voice. Classic.
simply stunning..
I want to be her!
@emergencyexit16 Yes Rita had white lineage in her family but Spanish people are considered hispanic, not white. the studio definitely de-ethnicized her to make her a leading lady. she underwent a painful electrolysis procedure on her hairline as well as other speculated plastic surgery. Check out her photos as rita cansino, there is a very noticeable difference.
@xseasoninreverse Huh? HIspanic isn’t a race. It means that you are descended from Spanish speaking people. Most Spaniards from Spain are considered white. They may have some distant Moorish blood, but she’s still white. Both her parents are from Spain making her white. What’s your definition of white? I am going by the three group theory of caucasoid, africoid/negroid, mongoloid…
@emergencyexit16 haha nevermind dude, you’re clearly too fucking stupid and racist to even realize what i’m telling you.
@xseasoninreverse Well, I am black so I have nothing to gain from stating the simple FACT that SPANIARDS ARE WHITE. Are you fucking stupid? READ A FUCKING BOOK YOU MORON. Racism has nothing to do with the FACT that SPANISH PEOPLE ARE WHITE…THEY ARE EUROPEANS YOU IDIOT. Do you know where Spain is located on a fucking map???? They are considered HISPANIC AND WHITE DUMBASS.
@xseasoninreverse You should kill yourself FOR BEING SO DAMN STUPID.
It’s a nice legend that this could be Rita’s actual singing voice but again it’s the voice of Anita Ellis that dubbed Rita for the film. While the other “Put the Blame on Mame” version is less intimate and with a big orchestra one can tell from the voice and the singing technique that this is Ellis, too, who also dubbed Rita for “Please Don’t Kiss Me” in “The Lady from Shanghai” which is equally slow and also accompanied by guitar and again it’s the very same voice.
anyone know where you can find he chords for this song?
She is so beautiful!

the lights…
simple yet sexy
@stitchgrl777 Of course, yes! Only Rita could be more Gorgeous than Rita! If that’s making any sense!
I guess the director or whoever was working with her discouraged her from singing because she didn’t have time for it. She was told to concentrate on her acting.
I AM TOTALLY MESMERIZED BY THIS WOMAN!!!
She’s a very talented guitarist…
awesome actress ! amazing charism! she’s so talented and graceful !
@pioninkukka Rita didn’t either.
@Denkyuu I hope that’s meant sarcastically. Rita is certainly stunning, but a guitar player she ain’t.
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooow Rita you’re a bomb! For ever in our memory.
Forever girl, forever…..
rita…unplugged so good
Check out the rating of this video - 734 people have brains. 2 people are stupid.

Who cares? She only accepted this because she did not want to be restricted to those stupid, stereotyped “sexy Latina” roles. I am a Latina, I am half-Spanish, I am proud of my roots, and if I were her I would do exactly the same. Rita was NEVER ashamed of her Spanish roots. Remember that she brought Spanish dance, music and style to the mainstream, just that! And remember that she had a British mother, so her looks were not a total ‘fake’, as you said.
