Marilyn and Rita were different, and cannot be compared. They were both good actresses, but to be fair Rita was a better dancer but Marilyn was a better singer but regardless they are both awesome.
The only thing that annoys me about this song is her ‘playing’ of the guitar. (What a star though.)

I like both Rita and Marilyn, they both had their talents. Rita was good dancer, especially in her movies with Fred Astaire. Marilyn was good singer, especially in River of No Return and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. I do not think the two can be compared, it’s like apples and oranges. One thing is for certain though, they were both amazing.

I just got the movie from netflix. IN the extras they had a mini documentary about the movie. Rita didn’t sing this or any other song in her movies. She was also classy enough to let anyone know who asked and always gave the credit to the real singer.

I have read that Rita sang this herself, but to my ears, it sounds like Anita Ellis. Rita may have sung the song during the filming, but it was typical to dub over the singer’s voice using a professional singer. Ellis was a total pro at adapting her own voice to the voice of the actress. I read a story where she had overdubbed Carol Landis, and Landis couldn’t tell it wasn’t her own voice and was pleased at how good she sounded. Rita had a nice voice, but very small and limited in range.

not true; i repeat it again and again; i have the interview of 1972 where rita herself says it is her original voice…AND this voice is much more husky and darker than ellis´voice, like ritas gorgous speaking voice was. She had the voice for the guitar-version, but not for a great orchestral version.
And I repeat it once more: It’s Ellis’ voice here. Please Yann, just compare it with “Please Don’t Kiss Me” from “The Lady from Shanghai” - it has the same intimate sound and it’s the same voice and definitely not Rita’s. No matter what Rita said or Gene Ringgold claimed (he obviously knew the interview as well). Why should Columbia deny it even today when they could make good cash with such a legend? By the way, Rita’s speaking voice is actually not very “dark” in my opinion.
Also when you look at her guitar playing you’ll notice that it doesn’t match 100% with what you here. And it’s also pretty much impossible to play the guitar with such long fingernails on the left hand, trust me, I know what I’m talking about

And as I already told you before and like somebody else mentioned, Rita might have sang herself while shooting the scene but was dubbed afterwards without knowing. She also said in that very same interview that her full name was Margarita Carmen Dolores Cansino while her birth certificate PROVES that “Dolores” was not part of her name!
“dolores” means “pain” - she might have added that, who knows, because of its significance in her childhood ?

I don’t understand why you prefer her having an image of a victim. Rita was by all accounts a very dignified person. I don’t think she would have liked to be considered a “victim”, except for being a victim of a terrible desease.

I just saw Gilda for the first time tonight and I loved it. Rita was so beautiful and talented in it. She was one hell of a dancer as well. I love and miss you Rita!

this is my fav glenn ford film and i know its all about rita but i love glenn ford and i think the chemistry between the two are brilliant and the dialogue dont know if i spelt that right but anyway the screen writer should have gotten an oscar
