I love Lucy, but Angela owned as Mame and had much better chemistry with Bea. Plus, one of the best things about this duet is the contrast between Mame and Vera’s voices. Lucy’s voice was too similar to Bea’s, being deep, only Bea’s voice was naturally deep (and therefore sounded better) and Lucy’s voice was deep from smoking.

Ditto! It’s too bad our modern culture doesn’t nurture stars like these anymore. In the Golden Era, an entertainer had to know how to sing, dance, and act–all at the same time and with impeccable style and good taste!

Bea Arthur and Angela Lansbury first met when they did ‘Mame’ together, which was launched on Broadway on May 24, 1966 - Angela Lansbury as auntie Mame and Bea Arthur as Vera Charles. In this clip 20 years later they bring Vera and Mame back to life…

@marcosvalenca that is kinda one of the reasons I don’t like her too much as Mame. Mame seems like to much of a mess to be played by Angela

  121. April 24, 2010 07:12 am
    marcosvalenca

@Sail0rIo Kyle, have you seen Lansbury play Mrs. Lovett in “Sweeney Todd”? She created a criature completely different from herself. Angela is a seasoned actress, she can really become very different characters. Bea Arthur, who I also love, always said it was a mistake to give the part to Lucelle Ball. Plus, Angela’s voice and singing ability more than surpass Lucy’s.As most people, I love Lucy, the greatest TV comedienne, but Mame should have been done by Angela.

@FinnGuy76 on the MONEY!!!! u are so right. that golden age of hollywood when the actresses and actors, still had talent. they did it all. they were timeless. now it’s about their exploits on the tabloid front page. sad, really sad. and to think hollywood caters to young people (who have no disposable income, just what we give them). oh well. but we still have some greats today, Mirren, Winslet, Maggie Smith, Dench, Benning, etc.

These two are so amazing. Angela looks simply classy, her dress is so gorgeous and Bea’s timing is always spot-on. They couldn’t have picked two better ladies to perform this. Miss you Bea!
